Storing your data

When you close the program, your data is "forgotten", so it is usually wise to store it to hard-disk.

i2Brain stores:

all the items and links you entered,
their positions,
the sizes and positions of your views
your choice of filter and color scheme.

Please make special note of the following behaviour which causes some users problems:

  1. you enter items in a view,
  2. you close that view,
  3. you store the data.
  4. You close i2Brain.
  5. You start i2Brain again
  6. and read the data you just stored,

then your items are still there! But, you can't see them because you haven't a view with which to see them. Similarly, objects in a house exist even though all the curtains are closed, so nobody can see in. If you open a view like the one you had before, they will all be there. However, their positions are lost: they are all lined up down the left of the view. What has happened?

  1. The items exist whether there is a view or not.
  2. You closed the view, so information about their positions was no longer stored anywhere.
  3. You were able to see the items again when you opened a view on them.

Your data is stored automatically every 5 minutes into a ".bak" file. When you choose "save" in the menu, the last version of the saved data is moved the .bak, and your current version is stored in the ".i2b" file.

Use:

Click or "File | Save" in the main window. If you haven't saved the current project before, enter a file-name and directory when prompted as in most other programs.

Reading data from a file

You may only read files that were previously stored by i2Brain.

Use:

Click or select "File | Open", then choose the required file.
